Ruth Borgenicht

Ruth Borgenicht is not only an artist but also a mathematician. Her dynamic sculpture can be moved and manipulated to create different shapes, essentially resulting in multiple art pieces in one form. Her clay pieces are created with chain mail, which is developed by mathematical calculations. Worn under Medieval armor, chain mail is made of tiny interlocking metal rings designed to protect a body in motion. Like the ancient armor, her pieces are made of a fabric of moveable interlocking rings. The chain mail pattern and other woven patterns result in ceramic works that conjure up a sense of permanence and defensive concealment. Ruth Borgenicht’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Delaware Art Museum, the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art in Sedalia, Missouri, and the Sparta Teapot Museum in Sparta, North Carolina.
