Paul Flippen

Paul Flippen creates visual puzzles. His works are autobiographical, functioning as metaphorical self-portraits that communicate through the layering of associative meaning. Objects, emblems or patterns act as citations, references to aspects of his artistic and personal relationships. His paintings communicate through several languages simultaneously by incorporating a variety of applications and techniques. Crisp-edged patterns and representations overlay, and comment on, the central image of the panel. These build and overlap - circles of intent that clarify their meaning through the accumulation of implications.
