Janet Bothne

Janet Bothne believes that we have personal associations with color. Color consistently plays important roles in emotional states and reveals much about personalities. With paint, she weaves her colors, searching for the exquisite relationships that might bring about that harmonious hum or violent discord. The “Long Division” series is a group of horizontal diptychs. The divided canvases are used as a metaphor for the interruptions that are so constant in modern life, but also demonstrate a triumph over disruption - a hope that connections, goals and unity can be achieved despite obstacles and divisions. The “Stopping by Woods” series resulted from the artist's experimentation with striations of color on the vertical, rather than the horizontal arrangements. During her experimentation, images of the woods began to emerge, resulting in expressive landscapes that still allowed the palette to come forward as the overall subject matter. The titles are homage to Robert Frost’s poem, “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” which speaks to the quiet observance of one’s surroundings and the incredible sensory abundance all around us if we take time to notice. Janet Bothne’s work is located in corporate collections in the U.S. including Overbrook Entertainment and Lowe Enterprises in Los Angeles, California and TBG Partners in Dallas, Texas.
